How many beans for tamales
Plan 1 to 2 cups of cooked or refried beans per dozen tamales. I opened five bean tamale recipes on 2026-10-17 and divided each bean amount by its yield. They run from 1.0 to 2.0 cups per dozen, which is a spread of two to one. By my arithmetic that is about 1 1/3 tablespoons of beans per tamale at 1 cup per dozen and 2 2/3 at 2 cups.
| Recipe | Beans as printed | Yield | Cups per dozen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Parties That Cook, black beans and jack cheese | 2 cups cooked black beans, 8 oz jack | 24 tamales | 1.00 |
| Melissa's, black bean, chile and cheese | 2 cups cooked black beans (the steps say 2 tablespoons per tamale), cheddar sticks | 24 tamales | 1.00 |
| Hola Jalapeno, vegetarian tamales | 4 cups refried black beans (1 to 2 tablespoons per tamal), 1 lb Oaxacan cheese | 30 to 40 tamales | 1.20 to 1.60 |
| Mexican Made Meatless, bean and cheese | 4 cups refried beans, 1/2 lb Chihuahua cheese | 24 to 28 tamales | 1.71 to 2.00 |
| Pati Jinich, sweet potato and black bean | 2 cups refried beans (about 2 teaspoons per tamale), in a sweet potato masa | 12 tamales | 2.00 |
Per-dozen values are my own division of each printed bean amount by its printed yield, sorted from least beans to most. Where a recipe gives a range of tamales, the range of cups follows from it.
Where the pages disagree with themselves
Two pages state a spoonful per tamale next to a total that does not match it. Melissa's says to put 2 tablespoons of beans on each portion but lists 2 cups for 24 tamales. Two tablespoons times 24 is 48 tablespoons, or 3 cups, so the full spoonful needs more beans than the list. That is my arithmetic, not a figure on the page.
Pati Jinich's tamales sit at the high end with 2 cups for 12, yet the page says about 2 teaspoons of refried beans per tamale. Two cups is 96 teaspoons, which is 8 per tamale, so the list and the spoonful differ by about 4 to 1. Her beans are a small center in a sweet potato masa, so this is the least typical row.
Hola Jalapeno and Mexican Made Meatless agree with their own totals. Hola's 4 cups for 30 to 40 tamales comes to 1.6 to 2.1 tablespoons each, in line with the 1 to 2 tablespoons it prints. Both pair the beans with cheese cut into strips, 1 lb for Hola's 30 to 40 tamales and 1/2 lb for Mexican Made Meatless's 24 to 28. How much cheese for tamales divides those out per dozen.
Parties That Cook and Melissa's use the least, 1.0 cup per dozen. Parties That Cook has 2 cups of cooked, drained black beans and 8 oz of Monterey jack for 24 tamales.
Cups of beans by dozens
| Dozens | Tamales | Cooked or refried beans, cups |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 24 | 2 to 4 |
| 3 | 36 | 3 to 6 |
| 4 | 48 | 4 to 8 |
| 5 | 60 | 5 to 10 |
| 6 | 72 | 6 to 12 |
| 8 | 96 | 8 to 16 |
| 10 | 120 | 10 to 20 |
| 15 | 180 | 15 to 30 |
The range is my pick, spanning the lowest and highest recipe. If you like a full spoonful in every tamale, cook toward the top. A dozens link opens the planner with the cheese or vegetable filling.
A 20-guest example
Twenty guests at 4 tamales each is 80, which rounds up to 7 dozen (84 tamales). That takes 7 to 14 cups of beans. Open the planner with the cheese or vegetable filling for the masa, lard, husks and steamer loads. Lard is not vegetarian, so for a meatless batch see the substitutes on how much lard for tamales. For the dough in a sweet batch, how much masa for sweet tamales. For a crowd, how many tamales for 100 people.
